This QLD local council is looking for a Strategic Planner (Strategic Land Use) to support the development and delivery of complex strategic land use plans that guide the long-term growth and sustainability of the region.
The Council are looking for a motivated and skilled planner who can contribute to shaping the future of the community through strategic planning initiatives, policy implementation, and collaboration across Council and with external stakeholders.
Working within the Planning and Environment team, this role will contribute to the implementation and review of planning schemes, strategic projects, and land use strategies that support sustainable regional development.
Key Responsibilities - Deliver high-quality strategic planning services, including reports, assessments, and professional advice to support Council planning processes and decision-making.
- Assist with the implementation, maintenance, and amendment of planning schemes, strategic planning instruments, and infrastructure charging frameworks.
- Interpret and apply relevant legislation, policies, and guidelines, including the Planning Act 2016 and Minister’s Guidelines and Rules.
- Develop and contribute to strategic land use planning projects, including strategies, master plans, precinct plans, and placemaking initiatives.
- Prepare clear and professional reports, correspondence, and planning advice for internal stakeholders, external clients, and the community.
- Work collaboratively across Council to share knowledge, improve processes, and support organisational outcomes.
- Engage effectively with stakeholders, including government agencies, community members, and industry representatives.
- Contribute to business improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to support continuous improvement.
- Maintain compliance with Work Health and Safety requirements, taking reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others.
The Successful Candidate - A solid understanding of the Planning Act 2016, Minister’s Guidelines and Rules, and other relevant planning legislation and policies.
- At least three years’ experience in a town planning or strategic planning role, particularly involving the development of strategic planning instruments.
- Experience in strategic land use planning, including the preparation of strategies, master plans, precinct plans, or placemaking projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports and advice.
- Proven ability to build relationships and negotiate positive outcomes with a range of stakeholders, including in politically sensitive environments.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with strong attention to detail.
- A degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline from a recognized university.
- A Queensland C Class driver’s license (minimum provisional).
Desirable experience includes: - Experience working in local or state government planning environments.
- Involvement in drafting or amending planning schemes and strategic planning documents.
- Experience with community engagement processes.
- Knowledge of heritage or conservation planning, including historic buildings or culturally significant sites.
- Eligibility for membership of a relevant professional planning association.
