We are looking for an experienced Senior Drainage Engineer to join a dynamic local government team on an initial 3-month contract, with strong potential for extension. This role will suit a seasoned drainage professional with extensive council experience who can hit the ground running, provide technical leadership, and support key drainage and flood management initiatives across the municipality.
About the Role: - Working within the Infrastructure and Drainage team, you will play a lead role in progressing several critical strategic projects, including:
- Development of the 10-year Drainage Upgrade Strategy, informed by current network condition data
- Collaboration on the Melbourne Water Flood Mapping Project
- Coordination with Engeny on the Drainage Upgrade Strategy based on flood modelling
- Supporting drainage planning related to growth areas and Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) impacts
You’ll work closely with internal planning, asset, and maintenance teams, as well as key external stakeholders, to ensure that the stormwater network performs to agreed standards and meets future demands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead investigations, strategy development, and capital works planning for drainage network performance and upgrades
- Provide technical drainage advice to internal teams, consultants, and residents
- Oversee and mentor the Drainage Referrals Engineer, ensuring timely assessment of referrals and strong customer service delivery
- Contribute to flood mapping, drainage information systems, and strategic drainage documentation
- Represent Council on drainage matters with key authorities such as Melbourne Water and South East Water
- Support continual improvement of drainage asset management systems and practices
About You You’ll bring extensive technical knowledge, leadership ability, and local government experience to this position. You will be confident managing drainage related investigations, asset planning, and stakeholder coordination and capable of mentoring junior engineers while contributing to broader stormwater strategy and planning outcomes.
To be successful, you will have: - Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- Significant experience in local government drainage engineering, including stormwater and flood modelling
- Strong understanding of drainage asset management, capital works, and flood mitigation
- Proven ability to lead and mentor others within a technical environment
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Working knowledge of GIS and drainage information systems
