This QLD regional council is seeking an experienced Senior Development Engineer to join their Development Engineering team. This role is responsible for providing specialist engineering assessment, technical advice and support to ensure development applications and construction works comply with relevant legislation, Council standards and policies.
  
Key Responsibilities
Development Assessment & Technical Advice
  • Assess complex development applications and prepare accurate, timely reports and recommendations in accordance with delegated authority.
  • Provide expert engineering advice, technical guidance and support to internal stakeholders, developers, consultants and the broader community.
  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation, engineering standards, policies and development requirements to achieve compliant outcomes.
  • Analyse complex engineering matters and provide practical, risk-based solutions.
  
Stakeholder Engagement & Negotiation
  • Liaise and collaborate with internal departments, developers, consultants and external agencies to support integrated development assessment outcomes.
  • Assist with negotiations to achieve practical and compliant engineering design solutions.
  • Build positive working relationships that facilitate effective service delivery and customer satisfaction.
  
Construction Compliance & Quality Assurance
  • Undertake inspections of construction works and compliance investigations to ensure adherence to approved plans, conditions and standards.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to engineering design and construction practices that reduce long-term maintenance costs and improve asset performance.
  • Monitor engineering outcomes to ensure sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure delivery.
  
Continuous Improvement & Leadership
  • Contribute to the development, review and continuous improvement of engineering policies, procedures and standards.
  • Support innovation and best-practice engineering outcomes within the Development Engineering team.
  • Mentor and coach team members, sharing knowledge and supporting professional development.
  • Provide technical leadership and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
  
The Successful Candidate
You are an experienced civil engineering professional with a strong background in development assessment, civil design and construction. You possess excellent technical expertise and can confidently assess complex engineering matters while balancing regulatory compliance, practical outcomes and customer expectations.
  
Mandatory Requirements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering (AQF Level 7 or higher).
  
Licenses & Certifications
  • Current Class C or CA Driver License valid in Queensland.
  • General Construction Induction (White Card).
  
Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrated senior-level experience in civil design, construction and development assessment approvals and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of engineering standards, development requirements and relevant legislation.
  • Highly developed written communication skills with the ability to research, analyse and prepare technical reports and recommendations.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, including consultation, negotiation and advisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support team members while contributing to team effectiveness.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, organize workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex engineering issues and apply best-practice principles.
  
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience working within a Local Government environment.
  • Experience assessing complex subdivision and development applications.
  • Knowledge of Queensland planning and development legislation.
  • Experience undertaking construction inspections and compliance investigations.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to policy, procedure and engineering standard development.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and coaching within a professional engineering team.
  • Eligibility for membership or registration with a relevant professional engineering body.
