A local council in Melbourne’s North is seeking an experienced Planning Investigations Officer  on a 3-month contract to join their Planning Investigations team. This role plays a key part in ensuring developments comply with planning legislation and maintaining community amenity and safety.

The role:
  • Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with planning permits and relevant Acts
  • Investigate alleged planning breaches and take enforcement action where required
  • Endeavour to resolve disputes and achieve compliance through effective negotiation before pursuing legal proceedings
  • Undertake administrative duties to ensure the compliance function operates efficiently
  • Prepare briefs of evidence for matters progressing to VCAT or Magistrates’ Court
  • Provide timely and clear advice to council officers and the public
  • Ensure the Planning Investigation Service operates as a centre of excellence, delivering innovative, professional, and highly responsive service to business and the community
  • Keep the Coordinator Development Compliance informed of key investigations and related issues
  • Ensure services meet Service Plus obligations, including the use of the Council’s Customer Service System Pathway and Objective
  • Provide guidance, support, and counselling to employees to ensure high levels of customer service
  • Undertake other duties as directed within the skills and abilities of the role
What we’re looking for:
  • Tertiary qualification in town planning, compliance, or a related field, or substantial relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of planning legislation and compliance processes
  • Experience interpreting plans, permits, and conditions
  • Excellent investigation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple compliance matters concurrently with minimal supervision
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Local Council Experience

  • Victorian Driver’s Licence
  • Police Check and Working with Children Check
  • Proof of Australian work rights
