Payroll Team Lead
ASAP Start, 3 month temporary contract

38 hours per week | Hybrid work arrangement
$70–$79 per hour + superannuation
We are looking for an experienced Payroll Team Lead to join our client — a well-established local council in Melbourne’s south east — on a 3-month temporary contract with an immediate start.
This is a great opportunity to step into a senior payroll role within a complex, high-volume environment, leading a dedicated team and making a real impact from day one.
The Role - Lead end-to-end payroll operations for a council of approximately 1,000 employees, ensuring accurate and timely processing in line with the accounting timetable
- Supervise and develop a team of Payroll Officers, managing workload priorities and building capability across the team
- Own salary and associated costs budgeting (including FBT), General Ledger reconciliations, and superannuation contributions
- Maintain compliance with relevant Awards, enterprise agreements, WorkCover obligations, and applicable legislation
- Act as the subject matter expert for the Chris21 payroll system, partnering with IT to ensure system integrity and continuous improvement
What You Bring
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a payroll role within Local Government, Healthcare, Education, NFP, or State/Federal Government
- Mandatory experience with iChris/Chris21 payroll system
- Advanced MS Excel skills
- Proven ability to supervise and lead a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Sound knowledge of payroll legislation, Award interpretation, and General Ledger reconciliation
