Local Council – South East Melbourne

Public Sector People are partnering with a progressive local council in Melbourne’s south east to recruit an experienced Payroll Officer for a 6-month temporary contract. This is a great opportunity to join a collaborative payroll team within a busy and supportive council environment, contributing to the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services for a large and diverse workforce.

This role is ideal for a payroll professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, has strong attention to detail, and takes pride in delivering high quality payroll services while supporting employees and managers with payroll enquiries.

Key Responsibilities
  • End-to-end payroll processing, including preparing payroll journals, bank transfers and EFT payments within strict timelines
  • Payroll reconciliation and reporting, ensuring payroll aligns with the General Ledger and managing PAYG, superannuation and other deductions
  • Maintaining and updating payroll and HR systems, including employee records, salary changes, terminations and employment movements
  • Providing payroll advice and support to managers and employees on payroll matters, employment conditions and leave entitlements
  • Ensuring compliance and accuracy through maintaining clear audit trails, managing leave balances and adhering to governance and privacy requirements

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Previous payroll experience within Local Government, Healthcare, Education, NFP or State/Federal Government
  • 2–3 years’ experience in a similar payroll position
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in payroll, finance, HR or a related discipline
  • Experience using Aurion and/or Humanforce payroll systems
  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience within local government while contributing to an organisation committed to supporting its community and workforce.
