About the Role
A unique leadership opportunity is available to join Maribyrnong as the Municipal Building Surveyor. Reporting to the Manager City Development, you will lead a capable and established Building Services team, including a Deputy MBS, Inspectors, and Technical Officers, to deliver an innovative and customer-focused approach to building regulation and compliance.
This leadership role oversees all building services functions across the municipality, ensuring safety, compliance, and high-quality outcomes for the community. The variety of building stock, from high-rise and complex developments through to residential and precinct-based projects - offers significant professional challenge and impact. You will play a pivotal role in managing compliance, protecting community safety, and guiding Council’s response to emerging issues such as cladding and large-scale redevelopment.
The position also requires strong people leadership: fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team. You will represent Council at hearings and tribunals, provide high-level advice to senior stakeholders, and work closely with community members, developers, and state agencies to support safe and sustainable outcomes.
About the Successful Applicant
To excel in this role, you will be a registered Building Surveyor (Unlimited) with extensive experience in building surveying, including compliance and enforcement in a local government or comparable environments. You will bring:
- Demonstrated experience leading teams, mentoring staff, and building capability.
- The ability to resolve complex compliance issues and provide innovative solutions in a fast-paced urban environment.
- Highly developed communication and negotiation skills, with confidence representing Council in public forums and tribunals.
- A commitment to customer service, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement.
Above all, you will be an authentic and collaborative leader, able to set high standards for professional conduct while fostering a supportive and motivated team culture.
