About the Council
Maribyrnong City Council is a diverse, fast-growing inner-west municipality, shaped by major transport corridors, urban renewal precincts and some of Melbourne’s most significant redevelopment activity. The organisation operates in a complex, highly visible environment, balancing growth, community expectations and infrastructure investment, while working closely with State Government, industry and local stakeholders.
With a strong pipeline of work and increasing interface across transport, development and asset protection, Council continues to evolve how it plans, delivers and manages engineering and transport outcomes for its community.
About the Role
The Manager Transport & Engineering is a key leadership role within the Infrastructure Services directorate, responsible for providing strategic and operational oversight across transport planning, civil design, development engineering and project delivery. Reporting to the Director Infrastructure Services, you will lead a multidisciplinary team delivering technically complex, high-impact outcomes that directly influence how people move through and experience the municipality.
This role combines technical leadership with people leadership. You will provide trusted engineering advice to the organisation, while also setting direction, building capability and bringing structure and momentum to a team navigating change, and growth. There is a genuine opportunity to shape the future structure of the department and establish a strong, sustainable leadership group.
The role involves extensive engagement with internal planning teams, major developers, State Government agencies and the community. Sound judgement, clear communication and the ability to balance risk, safety, delivery and long-term asset outcomes will be critical to success.
About the Candidate
This opportunity will suit a qualified engineer who enjoys leading people as much as leading outcomes. You may already be operating at Manager level, or you may be a high-performing Coordinator or Program Leader ready to step into a broader leadership role. In either case, you will bring strong technical credibility, the ability to influence across the organisation, and a calm, considered leadership style.
Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering are strongly sought after, along with the ability to meet registration requirements under the Professional Engineers Registration Act. Experience leading technical teams in complex environments is essential. Local government experience is advantageous, but not essential for candidates who can demonstrate relevant leadership, stakeholder management and delivery capability.
Application Process
Maribyrnong City Council is committed to building a diverse, inclusive and high-performing organisation that reflects the community it serves. We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds, including women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and people with disability.
Applications close 10 February.
