About the Role
Reporting directly to the Director of Infrastructure & Environmental Sustainability, the
Chief Engineer
will lead a team of technical professionals to ensure the effective delivery of current and future capital works programs. This includes roads, footpaths, kerb & gutter, stormwater systems, and marine infrastructure.
You will play a pivotal role in asset management strategy, civil design, traffic planning, and the integration of sustainability outcomes into infrastructure development. The role also acts as the key asset owner and strategic planner for the organisation’s core infrastructure assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership to the Engineering Services
team, including project planning, asset renewal and design
- Act as asset owner
for roads, footpaths, kerb & gutter, stormwater infrastructure and marine assets
- Deliver the Capital Works Program in line with time, budget, and quality expectations
- Lead the development and implementation of Asset Management Plans, policies and condition-based programs
- Oversee complex civil infrastructure design and apply strategic planning to project delivery
- Lead initiatives in traffic and transport planning, road safety, parking strategy, and active transport infrastructure
- Manage engineering input into development proposals and infrastructure-related policies
- Provide expert technical advice across all levels of the organisation
- Ensure effective budget and contract management across design and infrastructure portfolios
- Build and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary engineering team
- Act as Director of Infrastructure & Environmental Sustainability

What You’ll Bring
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering
or a related discipline
- Extensive experience in infrastructure planning, civil design, asset management and capital works delivery
- Demonstrated leadership experience in local government or large-scale civil infrastructure environments
- Deep understanding of asset lifecycle management and strategic infrastructure planning
- Experience with Maintenance Management and Asset Management Systems
- Strong commercial, contract, and financial management capabilities
- Ability to manage stakeholder relationships and influence across departments
- Proven track record in delivering complex infrastructure programs on time and within budget
- Familiarity with traffic and transport planning, water-sensitive urban design and sustainability initiatives
