About Stonnington
The City of Stonnington is one of Melbourne’s most dynamic inner-urban municipalities, home to diverse neighbourhoods, highly engaged communities and a strong expectation for quality, responsiveness and delivery. With a rich mix of residential, commercial and public spaces, Stonnington operates in a fast-paced, highly visible environment where infrastructure investment directly shapes how people live, move and connect.
Over recent years, the organisation has been evolving its approach to capital planning and delivery, shifting from a traditional “project delivery” model toward a more integrated, end-to-end focus on planning, design and execution. This creates a compelling opportunity for a leader who enjoys working in complexity, partnering across the organisation and helping teams lift how they operate.
About the Role
The Manager City Projects plays a critical leadership role within Stonnington’s Environment & Infrastructure directorate, responsible for shaping and delivering Council’s capital works program across civil infrastructure, buildings and facilities, and public realm projects.
Reporting to the Director Environment & Infrastructure, you’ll lead a multidisciplinary team of experienced coordinators and project professionals, overseeing a capital program of approximately $45–50 million per annum, with a strong emphasis on asset renewal and upgrade works. While the technical foundations are well established, the focus of this role is very much on how work gets done, lifting planning discipline, improving program certainty, and building a contemporary, accountable project delivery culture.
A key priority will be guiding the department through a period of transition, as the function evolves from a narrow delivery focus to a broader remit that spans planning, design and delivery in partnership with asset management, operations and the wider organisation. This includes embedding consistent project management frameworks, strengthening portfolio oversight, and ensuring the right projects receive the right level of attention.
This is not about expedient delivery at all costs. It’s about prioritisation, judgement and quality; having the confidence to call issues early, reset expectations when needed, and focus effort where it will deliver the greatest community benefit.
About You
You’re a confident, emotionally intelligent leader who enjoys working with capable people and helping them operate at their best. You bring energy, curiosity and a genuine appetite for improvement, and you’re comfortable stepping into an environment that isn’t perfect but one where change is welcomed and momentum must be built.
Your leadership style is collaborative but decisive. You know how to support experienced team members while also challenging long-standing ways of working. You’re able to navigate resistance with maturity, build trust through consistency, and bring people with you on the journey.
Just as importantly, you’re comfortable operating at a senior level. You can present clearly and credibly to executive leadership, manage competing expectations from councillors and the community, and adapt quickly when priorities shift. Whether you’re an emerging manager ready to step up, or a more experienced leader seeking a role with scope to shape and influence, what matters most is your mindset, judgement and leadership presence.
A background in delivering complex capital works across civil, building or public realm projects will be important, but this role is ultimately about leading people, driving change and lifting organisational capability.
