About City of Stonnington

The City of Stonnington is a progressive and high performing local government authority, delivering essential services to one of Melbourne’s most vibrant and highly engaged communities.

With a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and community impact, Stonnington is committed to delivering high quality services while continuing to invest in the people, systems, and leadership that drive long term organisational success. The organisation is values led, future focused, and committed to fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.

What stands out at Stonnington is the strong emphasis placed on leadership, autonomy, and trust. Leaders are empowered to drive outcomes, influence strategy, and build high performing teams within a supportive and flexible environment. Combined with a modern hybrid working model and strong employee benefits, this is an opportunity to join a Council genuinely focused on both organisational performance and people development.

As Council continues to strengthen strategic financial capability across the organisation, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced finance leader to step into a highly visible and influential Band 8 leadership role with Council.

About the Role

The Management Accounting & Analysis Coordinator sits within Council’s Finance team, reporting directly to the Finance Manager and leading the delivery of strategic financial management, business partnering, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting services across the organisation.

This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing Council’s management accounting function and long term financial planning framework, while supporting Executive leadership and business units through clear financial insights, analysis, and strategic advice.

Leading a team of 4 direct reports including Finance Business Partners, an Asset Accountant, and a Systems Accountant, this role combines technical finance leadership with stakeholder engagement, coaching, and organisational influence.

Core technical capability is essential. The role oversees budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, long term financial planning, and financial performance analysis, ensuring strong governance, financial discipline, and informed decision making across Council.

Beyond the technical requirements, this role is heavily focused on business partnering and leadership uplift.

The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening financial accountability and embedding a customer focused finance partnering model across the organisation. This includes presenting financial insights and recommendations to Executives and Managers, improving reporting and analytics capability, and driving continuous improvement across systems, dashboards, and financial processes.

Leadership capability will be critical. The team is capable and well established, with an opportunity for the incoming leader to continue developing capability, foster strategic thinking, and empower the team to operate at the next level.
This role requires someone who can operate strategically while remaining approachable and hands on when required.

The environment will suit a confident and collaborative leader who can build credibility quickly, influence stakeholders, and lead through trust.

About You

You are an experienced finance leader with strong technical capability across management accounting, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and long term financial planning within a complex organisational environment. Asset accounting knowledge or experience would be preferred, but is not essential.

You are confident providing strategic financial advice to senior stakeholders and can translate complex financial information into meaningful insights that support better organisational decision making.

You are commercially minded, proactive, and motivated by continuous improvement. You enjoy partnering with stakeholders, identifying opportunities to improve reporting and processes, and helping organisations strengthen financial performance and accountability.

Your leadership style is collaborative, empowering, and people focused. You know how to build trust, develop capability, and create accountability within teams while giving people the autonomy to succeed.

You bring strong stakeholder engagement skills and are comfortable presenting to Executive leadership, Managers, and broader business units. You can balance strategic thinking with operational delivery and are capable of navigating a fast paced and highly regulated environment.

This role would strongly suit:
  • An established finance leader within Local Government looking for a broader strategic leadership opportunity
  • A Finance Business Partnering or Management Accounting leader ready to step into a Band 8 role
  • A commercially astute finance professional from another regulated environment with strong leadership and business partnering capability
CA/CPA qualifications are essential, while Local Government experience and exposure to TechnologyOne will be highly regarded.
