Are you an experienced HR professional with strong
Employee and Industrial Relations
expertise? This northern Melbourne local council is seeking a
People & Culture Business Partner
to join their collaborative team. Starting as a
3–6 month temporary role, this position offers the strong potential to transition into a
permanent opportunity
for the right candidate.
About the Role This is a pivotal business partnering role within a complex organisation where you’ll be trusted to work independently and bring your expertise to the table. You will:
- Manage a heavy ER/IR portfolio, including investigations, disputes, performance management, and complex casework.
- Provide true partnering support
— going beyond advice to actively influence, coach, and work alongside leaders in achieving strong people outcomes.
- Support organisational change initiatives and contribute to future-focused projects, including workforce planning and technology improvements.
- Collaborate closely with two other Business Partners (who will cover local government–specific aspects of the portfolio) and a Payroll & Data Reporting Specialist.
About you
- Depth of experience in ER/IR
— you are confident managing complex issues and interpreting industrial instruments.
- A track record as a trusted HR Business Partner, operating independently in challenging environments.
- Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and build strong working relationships.
- The ability to balance operational ER/IR casework
with contributing to strategic projects.
- Strong knowledge of employment legislation, Awards, and Agreements (local government experience is a bonus, but not essential).
- Resilience, confidence, and the ability to deliver results without requiring close coaching or supervision.
Why Join?
- Pathway to permanency: Start in a 3–6 month temporary capacity with the potential to secure a long-term role.
- Impactful work: Use your expertise to resolve complex ER/IR issues and shape positive workforce outcomes.
- Supportive team: Work alongside experienced colleagues while being trusted to take ownership of your portfolio.
- Flexibility: Enjoy a hybrid working model — 3 days in the office, 2 from home.
- Community impact: Be part of a council that values diversity, inclusion, and making a difference for its community.
Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
