Our client, a leading council in Melbourne’s north-west, is seeking an experienced and strategic Head of People & Safety to lead their Work Health and Safety and Injury Management functions for a six-month period, while the incumbent focuses on a key organisational project.

This is an exciting opportunity to step into a senior leadership position within a progressive and community-focused local government, known for its commitment to wellbeing, inclusion and a positive workplace culture.

The Opportunity In this pivotal role, you will:

Drive the strategic direction and continuous improvement of WHS and Injury Management frameworks, systems and policies.
Provide expert advice, guidance and leadership to the Executive, Managers and staff across all levels of the organisation.
Champion a proactive and positive safety culture while promoting employee wellbeing.
Oversee workplace injury and claims management, ensuring effective early intervention and return-to-work outcomes.
Partner with key stakeholders and external providers to ensure best practice compliance, governance and safety performance.

About You You will bring:

Tertiary qualifications in Work Health & Safety, Human Resources or a related discipline, coupled with extensive leadership experience in WHS and Injury Management.
Proven success in developing and implementing strategic safety and wellbeing initiatives.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and influencing skills, with the ability to apply professional judgement in complex operational contexts.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
Previous experience working within local government and a strong understanding of relevant legislation, frameworks and practices.
