Financial Accountant Temporary | 6-month contract | ASAP Start
Local Council, South East Melbourne
38 hours per week | Hybrid work arrangement
$50-55 per hour + superannuation
We are looking for an experienced Financial Accountant to join our client, a well-established local council in Melbourne’s south east. This is a hands-on role where you’ll contribute to statutory reporting, compliance, and the day-to-day financial operations of a large public sector organisation. It’s a great opportunity to apply your technical accounting skills in a meaningful, community-facing environment.
What you'll be doing - Prepare and review financial statements, BAS, FBT returns, and grants commission reporting in line with Australian Accounting Standards and Local Government legislation
- Support year-end activities including financial close processes, accruals, and preparation of working papers to meet audit and statutory deadlines
- Maintain compliance across the Local Government Act 1989/2020 and associated regulations, including unclaimed monies and lease database management
- Support AP/AR functions including EFT payment checks, vendor approvals, debtor follow-up, and GST treatment review
- Provide backup across treasury accounting, bank reconciliations, and cash flow coordination during leave periods
- Maintain and develop financial systems including GL reporting, system interfaces, and operating procedure documentation
What we're looking for - Previous experience in local government, healthcare, education, NFP, or state/federal government
- 3–5 years’ experience in a similar financial accounting role
- Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or CA qualification (or working towards)
- Advanced MS Excel skills
