Public Sector People are working with a local council in Melbourne's eastern suburbs to recruit an Environmental Health Officer, for a 3 month temporary contract assignment.

The Environmental Health Officer role is responsible for promoting and safeguarding public health across the community by conducting inspections, investigating health concerns, and enforcing relevant legislation. Working within a team, the officer also engages with the community and local businesses to provide guidance, ensure compliance, and contribute to health education and continuous service improvement initiatives.

Key duties and responsibilities:
  • Inspect food premises and enforce public health legislation.
  • Educate businesses and assess health-related applications.
  • Investigate complaints, diseases, and public health risks.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports and legal documents.
  • Participate in health promotion and community education activities.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or equivalent including eligibility to be a member of Environmental Health Professionals Australia.
  • Experience in the field of Environmental Health.
  • Demonstrated local government experience in Environmental Health.
  • Strong understanding of food safety hygiene risk identification and control and the appropriate application to industry
  • Conversant with, and able to interpret, all legislation and standards relating to the role.
  • Able to make clear and comprehensive notes on observations which might form the basis of a report or be used in a Court brief.
  • Able to prepare clear and concise reports with recommendations on a course of action.
  • Able to analyse issues and take a course of action which reflects public health principles
  • Aware of the public health roles of other levels of government and agencies
  • Aware of the purpose and functions of local government.
  • Computer skills across the Microsoft Office range of applications as well as an ability to understand and use Council databases, including Property & Rating, Objective, , CRM, Health Manager, FoodTrader, and Food Sampling App.
  • Ability to manage own time, to plan and organise workloads and set priorities
  • Excellent time management and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve specific objectives within set timeframes
  • Ability to work constructively as part of a team
