We are currently looking for a Development Engineer to join a local council on a 5-month temporary contract. Candidates must have at least 3+ years’ experience in within a local government development engineering role, ideally with a growth council.

This role is responsible for reviewing and approving engineering construction plans for development applications, while providing specialist advice on traffic and drainage matters for both new developments and capital works projects. The position will also involve undertaking engineering investigations, preparing and recommending design solutions for customer enquiries (including drainage-related issues), and offering guidance and support to the Team Leader Development, project engineers, and surveillance officers.

Key duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide a development approvals function to deal with development construction plans, traffic matters, drainage, and technical assessments for new development, and service authority approvals
  • Liaise and negotiate with internal business units, external consultants and developers to provide solutions to technical problems resulting from development proposals
  • Determine and report on requirements for development proposals to ensure that the interests of the Council and the general community are not adversely affected and/or the operation of existing infrastructure is not compromised
  • Provide advice and support to surveillance officers on engineering issues as required
  • Review and update Councils development standards and guidelines
  • Respond to enquiries in written and verbal form relating to development proposals
  • Undertake technical investigations, and prepare technical, administrative reports
  • Assist with the preparation project briefs, design and contract documentation in consultation with the other units, residents and other stakeholders.
  • Obtain necessary approvals and permits required for the undertaking of the project works.
  • Ensure the provision of all services with a focus on customer service and industry best practice.
  • Respond to ratepayers and members of the public in an effective and timely manner.
  • Prepare timely responses in written and verbal form to technical based correspondence and customer inquiries.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering is required, Professional Engineers Registration would be considered an advantage
  • Demonstrated experience in the assessment of new development proposals.
  • Ability to consult with stakeholders in relation to new developments.
  • Ability to project manage, including the co-ordination of tasks, set priorities and work to timelines in a pressured environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with and gain cooperation from Councillors, residents, engineers, contractors, internal staff and other key stakeholders.
  • Well-developed written, oral and presentation skills.
