We are currently looking for a Drainage & Development Engineer to join a local council on a 3-month temporary contract. Candidates must have at least 2+ years’ experience in within local government.
This position will involve engineering design checks, construction supervision, and managing development impacts, while applying Integrated Water Management principles to new developments. You’ll handle drainage investigations, planning referrals, and service requests, working closely with internal teams to deliver high-quality outcomes in line with legislative standards.
Key duties and responsibilities: - Complete drainage designs in accordance with relevant standards assisting in the delivery of Council’s Capital Works Program.
- Investigate and review customer enquiries relating to drainage and flooding concerns within the municipality.
- Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans and studies for improved drainage outcomes within the municipality.
- Implement Integrated Water Management principles into all new developments and assist in the integration into Council’s capital works projects.
- Investigate and review customer enquiries and town planning referrals relating to engineering infrastructure requirements to meet statutory and organisation timeframes.
- Conduct engineering design checking, construction supervision and management of development impacts for developer works.
- Review and respond to engineering information service requests including Legal Point of Discharge and Build Over Easement requests.
- Foster and champion a collaborative environment and customer first focus ensuring all internal and external stakeholders are engaged and consulted on relevant matters.
- Maintain knowledge and awareness of current industry legislative requirements, standards and trends.

- Work collaboratively with various operational departments of Council to provide a high functioning drainage network and deliver high quality development outcomes.
- Produce accurate investigations, reviews and strategies for drainage and development related issues that align with appropriate legislation guidelines and standards.
Qualifications & Experience: - Tertiary engineering qualification in drainage and design management within the community infrastructure setting is preferred.
- Eligible to be a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of drainage and integrated water management including use of appropriate legislation, guidelines and standards for delivery of sustainable outcomes.
- Experience in drainage management and demonstrated knowledge of engineering development trends.
- Well-developed skills and expertise in community consultation and liaison with a demonstrated customer first focus.
