Traffic & Investigations Coordinator
Mackay Regional Council | Infrastructure Planning | Level 7 ($118,872 to $130,539)

Public Sector People are partnering with Mackay Regional Council to appoint a Traffic & Investigations Coordinator — a key technical leadership role responsible for managing traffic operations, investigations, road corridor governance and transport-related compliance activities across the region.

This is an opportunity to join a growing Infrastructure Planning team and play a central role in supporting safe, efficient and compliant use of Council-controlled roads and transport infrastructure.

The role combines technical traffic expertise with team leadership, stakeholder engagement and operational decision-making across one of Queensland’s largest regional councils.

The Role

Reporting to the Executive Manager Infrastructure Planning, you will lead traffic and investigations functions relating to road safety, heavy vehicle access, traffic management and operational transport matters across the Mackay region.

This role acts as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders, councilors, contractors and the community on traffic-related matters, while also supporting long-term transport planning and network performance outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading traffic investigations and operational traffic management activities
  • Reviewing and endorsing Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS)
  • Coordinating approvals relating to road closures, detours, heavy vehicle access and works
  • Providing specialist technical advice on traffic operations, transport planning and road safety matters
  • Managing stakeholder and community enquiries relating to traffic and transport issues
  • Supporting evidence-based transport planning through data analysis and technical investigations
  • Leading and mentoring technical staff within the Traffic & Investigations team
  • Liaising with consultants, contractors, utilities and government agencies
  • Ensuring compliance with HVNL, QGTM and relevant legislation and standards
  • Supporting continuous improvement and service delivery outcomes across the transport function

This role carries significant responsibility across operational traffic governance, customer engagement and transport network coordination.

About You

You are an experienced transport, traffic or civil infrastructure professional with strong technical capability and the ability to lead within a fast-paced operational environment.

Council is seeking someone who can confidently manage competing priorities, provide sound technical advice and support a collaborative team culture while engaging professionally with the community and key stakeholders.

You will bring:

  • Experience within traffic engineering, transport planning, road operations or civil infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of traffic management, road corridor operations and heavy vehicle access requirements
  • Experience reviewing TMPs, TGSs or traffic-related approvals
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder and community enquiries in a professional manner
  • Leadership or team coordination experience within a technical environment
  • Strong analytical, investigation and problem-solving capability
  • Knowledge of HVNL, QGTM and relevant transport legislation
  • Experience within local government, TMR or related infrastructure environments will be highly regarded
  • Degree qualifications in Engineering, Transport Planning or related discipline highly regarded but not essential depending on experience
  • White Card and current Driver’s Licence required

Council is open to candidates from both public and private sector backgrounds, particularly those with strong traffic operations, transport planning or road corridor management experience.

Why Join Mackay Regional Council?

Mackay Regional Council services approximately 125,000 residents across a rapidly growing region with significant transport, infrastructure and development activity.

This role offers:

  • Leadership opportunity within a growing Infrastructure Planning function
  • Exposure to major transport and infrastructure planning initiatives
  • Opportunity to influence operational and long-term traffic outcomes
  • Strong team culture and organisational support
  • Diverse technical workload across traffic operations and investigations
  • Coastal lifestyle within one of Queensland’s key regional centers
