About Hobsons Bay City Council
Located in Melbourne’s inner west, Hobsons Bay is a diverse municipality defined by its coastal environment, heritage neighbourhoods, and industrial employment hubs. With vibrant communities, active transport links, and a clear commitment to sustainability, the municipality continues to evolve while retaining a strong sense of identity. Council is focused on building inclusive, forward-looking communities and delivering long-term, place-based planning for current and future residents.
About the Role
This SEO-level position leads the Strategic Planning team at Hobsons Bay City Council, overseeing the delivery of major land use and policy initiatives that shape the city’s future direction. With a four-year strategic work plan, the role is responsible for guiding a small, capable team through a busy program of housing, heritage, industrial and precinct-based planning projects.
You’ll provide clarity, stability and leadership across the team, and work closely with internal partners in statutory planning, sustainability, economic development and social and affordable housing. The role is positioned for influence, helping shape how projects are prioritised, presented, and progressed across the organisation, including engagement with Council and Executive leaders.
With several foundational strategies now entering development stages, this is a unique opportunity to lead a high-impact work program from the ground up. Support is in place through a dedicated Team Leader and the current acting Coordinator, who will remain through to December to ensure a structured handover.
Candidate Profile
We’re seeking an experienced strategic planner with strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to deliver complex, long-term planning initiatives. You’ll bring confidence in managing multi-disciplinary projects and leading technical teams, along with sound knowledge of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and relevant policy frameworks.
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, both to represent the team internally and externally, and to guide a team of planners through a period of change with confidence and clarity. A collaborative, steady leadership style will be important, as will your ability to hold your own in briefings with Executive leaders and Councillors.
This role will suit an experienced coordinator or team leader looking to step into a broader strategic portfolio, or a senior planner with demonstrated capability to lead, mentor and manage a growing team.
