Public Sector People are partnering with Mackay Regional Council to appoint a Coordinator – Stormwater & Drainage — a critical leadership role responsible for shaping the long-term planning, renewal and resilience of stormwater and drainage infrastructure across the region.
This is an opportunity to influence strategic infrastructure decisions in a growing regional Council while leading a technically strong civil team delivering capital programs and asset strategies.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Coordinator Built Infrastructure & Natural Assets, you will lead the strategic planning and delivery of Council’s stormwater and drainage infrastructure across both urban and rural environments.
You will ensure alignment between long-term asset strategies, capital works programs, legislative compliance and environmental sustainability objectives.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the development and review of long-term stormwater asset management plans
- Coordinating capital works programs and future investment strategies
- Providing high-level technical advice in stormwater design, flood mitigation and drainage renewal
- Managing and mentoring engineers and technical staff
- Overseeing project prioritisation using condition data, risk analysis and service level frameworks
- Leading business case development and funding proposals
- Ensuring compliance with legislation, Australian Standards and Council policies
- Driving innovation in sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure solutions
This role operates under broad direction and carries significant accountability for resilience, growth planning and infrastructure performance across the region.
About You You are a technically credible civil infrastructure leader with strong stormwater and drainage expertise, supported by proven team leadership capability.
Council is seeking a leader who can balance deep technical knowledge with strategic planning, budget oversight and program delivery.
You will bring:
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- Significant experience in stormwater and drainage planning and delivery
- Strong understanding of asset lifecycle planning and risk-based prioritisation
- Experience with hydraulic modelling tools (e.g. TUFLOW) and GIS platforms
- Demonstrated capability managing capital works programs and budgets
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills across consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies
Local government experience will be highly regarded, particularly within complex growth or flood-prone environments.
