Public Sector People are partnered with a council in the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne to recruit a Child Safe and Compliance Advisor for a 12-month fixed term contract.

About the Role

In this advisory position, you will work with key stakeholders to educate staff members and the community in relation to their obligations for the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. You will work cross-functionally to coordinate Council’s child safety initiatives, provide expert guidance on compliance obligations, and ensure implementation of the Victorian Child Safe Standards, Reportable Conduct Scheme, and other key legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Progress the implementation and continuous improvement of Council’s Child Safe Standards and compliance obligations
  • Drive internal education and awareness through the Child Safe Communication Plan
  • Develop indicators to monitor and report on the implementation progress and compliance with the Child Safe Standards and Reportable Conduct Scheme
  • Provide expert advice on legislative requirements, including the Victorian Child Safe Standards, Reportable Conduct Scheme, the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework and other relevant legislation 
  • Support training delivery and identify development needs related to child safety
  • Liaise with key external bodies (e.g, Commission for Children and Young People, Victoria Police, Child Protection) on reportable conduct matters
  • Provide input to Council’s community engagement framework to ensure that the children and young people in the community are engaged around decisions that affect them
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Education or a related field
  • A thorough understanding and interpretation of relevant child safety legislation including the Victorian Child Safe Standards, Reportable Conduct Scheme, requirements for Working with Children Checks, the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework and the Australian Human Rights Commission’s National Statement of Principles for Child Safe Organisations, and other relevant legislation
  • Strong experience in implementing compliance systems and frameworks
  • Proven analytical skills in relation to input into policy formulation
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A police check and working with children check is required, or the willingness to undergo them
