Our client, a QLD State Government Department, is seeking an experienced AO6 Senior Management Accountant to join their Budget and Financial Management function. This is a hands-on management accounting role suited to someone who can move comfortably between detailed financial analysis and stakeholder-facing advice.

Location: Brisbane CBD - No WFH available
Hourly Rate: $79.17 per hour plus 12% super - Paid Weekly
Contract until 27th February 2027 with potential 6 month extension

Your Role:
You'll join a team responsible for the department's financial management framework - from day-to-day budget monitoring through to the annual State Budget process. You'll provide financial performance information and advice across the agency, monitor budgets against targets, and contribute directly to major deliverables including the State Budget papers and Estimates Committee briefs.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Provision of customer-focused financial management and financial performance information, advice and in-depth analysis
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and targets, identifying financial risks and recommending mitigation strategies
  • Prepare monthly and ad-hoc financial management reports, reconciliations, periodic reports, briefing notes, presentations and correspondence on complex financial management, budgeting and forecasting issues
  • Ensure the agency's annual budget and budget revisions are accurately reflected in the budget management system and reconciled with agency budget allocations
  • Assist in preparing the annual State Budget, including the Service Delivery Statement, Annual Report, Mid-Year Fiscal and Economic Review, Budget Submissions, and briefing notes to the Minister including Estimates Committee hearing briefs
  • Contribute to the development and review of financial management policies and procedures that support the agency's obligations under the Government's financial management framework, legislation, guidelines and standards
  • Review systems, processes and practices to identify opportunities for continual improvement in financial management processes and reporting systems
  • Maintain and develop positive, constructive and collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders, including business groups, senior management, Queensland Treasury and external service providers
  • Foster a professional environment that encourages commitment, ethical behaviour, skills development and continuous learning
  • Participate in ad-hoc projects and provide financial analysis support as needed
What You'll Bring:
  • Essential: demonstrated Management Accounting experience
  • Strong experience in budgeting and financial reporting, ideally within a government or large complex organisation
  • Ability to translate complex financial data into clear advice for non-financial stakeholders
  • Highly desirable: a relevant degree and membership with CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ (CAANZ), or MIPA status with the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), given the technical nature of this role
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work across business groups, senior management and external agencies
