About the Role

As the City of Greater Geelong’s Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor - Permits, you will contribute to an innovative, contemporary and customer centric Building Services team to ensure the safety of the Greater Geelong community.

You will be responsible ensuring building permits and inspections are delivered effectively and efficiently within the scope of Council policy and appropriate legislation.
  • Investigation and evaluation of major building permit applications and other consultancy services.
  • Supervise the investigation, evaluation and reporting of applications by a small team of building professionals.
  • Be the principle point of contact for building permit proposals.
  • Represent Council at Building Appeals Board hearings in respect to major appeal proceedings.
  • Assist the Municipal Building Surveyor to develop a policy for the processing of building permit applications in accordance with the Building Act, Regulations and ministerial advice provisions.
  • Act as Municipal Building Surveyor in the absence of the incumbent.
This role will be required to participate in after hours on-call/availability service and rostered overtime activities. 

About you  

To be successful in this role, you will have experience in the Building Surveying Industry and understand the operation of local government and legal process within Victoria. You will have an in-depth understanding of the Building Act 1993, Building Code of Australia, Victorian Building Regulations, ResCode implementation and Victorian building surveying system and associated legal processes.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications recognised by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) in respect to building surveying
  • Registration with the Building Practitioners Board as a Building Surveyor 
  • Ability to provide innovative solutions to contemporary problems
  • A strong theoretical and practical knowledge and ability to interpret building, associated legislation and practices
  • A working knowledge of a full range of building issues, legislation, construction techniques and building materials
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate and build working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Highly developed analytical, investigative, interpretative and problem-solving skills
