FIND A JOB IN YOUR discipline
It's an exciting time for our growing Public Sector team, as we formally introduce one of our newest associate consultants to the Sydney office, Timothy Watson! Like our other associate consultants, Tim has joined Public Sector People as part of our Growth Program; a program designed specifically for those looking to start and grow their recruitment career.
Over the last few months, Tim has been working closely with Public Sector People's dedicated Learning and Development team and the wider PSP across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, to learn and develop the core foundations of recruitment. Now more than halfway through his training, we spoke to Tim to learn why he wanted to pursue a career in recruitment, what roles he’ll be working on moving forward and his initial experiences with the Growth Program. Read about his experiences below:
What attracted you to Public Sector People and its Growth Program?
As this was my first role in recruitment, I was looking for an agency with a great culture, a strong focus on learning and development, and employee focused. Once I was informed about the Growth Program, the detail, structure, mentoring, and goals attracted me to come on board with Public Sector People.
The Growth program is designed for those who are relatively new to recruitment – what do you think has been a key part of the Growth program that has made you feel more comfortable when starting out in the industry?
The structure of the program has helped me immensely with my development. It is a gradual process with goals/targets to hit in each of its stages. You are given time to grow, learn, adapt, and perfect your craft throughout the whole process. Also, the mentoring, support, and experience from Leanne, Matt, and Tom (Leadership Team) assisting at every step of the way is invaluable to my overall growth.
Starting a new job is always a daunting process. What were your first few days at PSP like and how have you found the onboarding experience overall?
Starting a new job can be daunting. However, the PSP and D&B consultants made me feel very welcome. Everyone is bright, friendly, and welcoming to ensure I felt comfortable in my early days. The onboarding experience has been enjoyable overall. Scheduled video calls and/or face-to-face introduction chats have helped me to get to know everyone in PSP that’s not already in the Sydney office. Also, I’ve been lucky enough to have been flown down twice to collaborate with PSP Melbourne.
What are your goals moving forward with Public Sector People?
My goal is to become a market expert in Finance and Procurement for Public Sector People. I’d like to be a successful recruiter that is trusted by their candidates, clients, and colleagues, with the ambition of eventually leading my own team and joining senior management ranks.
What does prioritising people mean to you?
Prioritising people to me, means being able to build relationships with clients and to understand the needs and wants of their council to ensure that I am providing the best talent possible. It’s also important that I build trust with candidates to ensure I understand their ambitions, drivers, and what is truly important to them. From an internal perspective prioritising people also means supporting my colleagues in any way possible to ensure that they are set up for success.
Where do you hope to take your recruitment career?
I am driven and focused to build my brand as a market expert and top recruiter in Finance/Procurement for NSW metropolitan and regional councils.
What have you enjoyed most about working in recruitment so far, especially recruiting within the public sector?
I’ve enjoyed coming in every day to better myself from the day before. No two days are the same, and the opportunity to grow is endless. The opportunity to speak to countless different people and have that chance to create a positive impact on someone’s career is also very rewarding.
What can new employees expect working at Public Spector People-especially as part of the associate program?
New starters can expect a supportive and encouraging team of people who are always willing to go that extra mile to ensure you’re set up for success.
What areas will you be focusing on within Public Sector People moving forward?
I will be focusing on recruiting for finance temp roles within NSW local government moving forward.
When you’re not at work, where are we most likely to find you?
Outside of work, you’ll find me working out at the gym during the week before work. On the weekend, I’ll be trying to find the yummiest restaurant to eat at with friends or playing soccer with my local team.
