FIND A JOB IN YOUR discipline
The public sector spans over multiple industries and caters to a wide range of career opportunities. However, some of the most diverse job roles and opportunities within local councils and government organisations occur within the Business and Professional space. Professional roles can be found across all industries, from Construction to Aged Care and require candidates at all experience levels, from entry level to executive support. Such a busy and varied desk requires a recruiter who has an extensive knowledge on the market trends occruing within the Business and Professional space and can utilise this knowledge to guide their candidates towards roles that will best match their needs.
Thankfully, Public Sector People have found that in our consultant Sarah Kettlewell, who has been working with the company for almost five years and in that time, has focused on delivering the best outcomes for both her candidates and clients within Business Support and Professional services. Read on to find out more about Sarah's recruitment processes, how she builds and gains the trust of both her client and candidate base and the exciting roles she currently has available.
Can you explain your role at Public Sector People?
Having been with Public Sector People for coming up to 5 years now I am the Team Leader of Business Support & Professional Services, leading recruitment across Administration Business Support & Customer Service within Local Government in Victoria.
The ‘Business Support’ & ‘Professional’ space can be quite broad and diverse. Can you elaborate on the types of positions you focus on?
Anything and everything! It is a very diverse desk to manage and I will assist my clients with recruitment of any support driven roles across any department in Council ranging from Building, Planning, Local Laws, Aged, Community, Family Care & Customer Service. These roles can vary in level from Administration, Business & Project Support, up to Executive Support roles.
Who are the candidates you ideally look for when filling these positions?
In support roles I believe culture fit is super important, especially when you are stepping into what can be an initial short-term contract. Therefore, I look at engaging candidates who have a positive attitude, proactive approach to new working environments along with relevant industry & career experience.
What commitment will you make to the active job seekers you choose to work with?
I am committed to being available to job seekers. Job seeking can be tough at times which is something I appreciate and understand. I pride myself on personally knowing my candidates I work with, acting as a honest & trusted source to them & being available to these people whether it be assisting them in their next role or providing general industry advice & updates, resume tips & tricks & sometimes just a general life chat!
How do you build a relationship with both your candidates and your clients- why is this important?
It really flows on from the above; I want to really know both candidates and clients I work with by staying in touch regularly whether that be by phone or in person, understanding people’s motivators and drivers so I can easily match a candidate to a client when needs arise. I also want both candidates and clients to know who I am and what I stand for as a recruitment partner, ultimately developing truly honest & trusting relationships.
Why is the aftercare stage so important in the recruitment process- especially in the public sector?
The aftercare process is so important especially when placing candidates into roles that are a short-term contract. They are joining teams that are well established and this can be a daunting thought. The only way we can understand how a candidate is settling in, or how the assignment is tracking is to keep in touch regularly with all parties. To build a trusting relationship with both client & candidate, you need to be able to identify any potential issues or changes as they arise and act as a facilitator to both candidate and client, so that you can ensure you are creating the best outcomes for all.
How do you conduct the aftercare process in the roles you recruit for?
With the roles that I recruit at a minimum, I guarantee contact with both working candidates and clients on a fortnightly basis – sometimes more If they’re lucky!
