With the spread of coronavirus affecting everything from international travel to the availability of hand sanitizer, many businesses are sending employees home to work remotely until the virus can be slowed. Although working from home seems like the ultimate luxury, most professionals forget about one crucial element: productivity.
During my transition of relocating from Melbourne to Brisbane to set up our office in the Sunshine state, I regularly had to work from home. Working from home is great, but it can become tedious if you struggle with staying productive. I've compiled a bunch of great work-at-home tips and tricks from my experience of working from home which will hopefully help keep your productivity levels high.
You will not be productive if you are sitting on your bed in your PJ’s. Ensure you have a comfortable chair and enough room for your computer, phone, notepads etc.
This may seem like a silly obvious one, but it helps get you in the right frame of mind.
I personally think this is the most important point to remember. Ensure you have clear direction by prioritizing your objectives for the day. Start first with any urgent or outstanding matters, and work down in order of priority.
Sit outside if possible, get some fresh air and recharge before getting back to work.
If working from home is a temporary solution, as it is for many of us at this time, ensure you stick to your regular work hours. You do not want to break your normal routine.
If you and your team are all encouraged to work from home, then I suggest that you still chat and consult with each other daily, or weekly at least. We are fortunate in this day and age to have several different platforms (Skype, Microsoft teams, etc.) Being away from your team can be more difficult than anticipated for some, so ensure you are connected to keep your focus and morale up.
Last but not least, enjoy the extra time at without the daily commute, relish in being in the comfort of your own home during this manic time and stay positive!
